So let's get started!!!
Here's what you'll need:
Colored square paper
That's it!! I recommend using origami paper or thin paper. Any paper can be used but the thinner type will make it easier to fold. The great thing about origami paper is that the front side is one color and the backside is white. This makes it easier to know if your fold is being made to the frontside or to the backside. If you've never done origami before, this will all become much clearer as you follow along below. Also, if you are cutting your paper down to form a square, as much as possible, try to make sure all four sides are of equal length. This will make folding easier and your final product will look nicer. When making any origami shape, try your best to crease your folds well. This will make your final product look its best!
First up......a pumpkin! (Diagram taken from http://www.origami-club.com/holloween/)
1.) First take one corner and fold the paper diagonally in half to create a triangle. Make sure that your main color is facing outwards.
2.) Now repeat that step again to make a smaller triangle.
3.) Open one side of the triangle and open the pocket. Take the outer point and bring it down to create a diamond.
4.) Repeat on the opposite side.
5.) On one of the diamonds, fold back along the purple lines pictured below on both the rights and left side. To do this, you may want to fold it to the front first and make a crease, then fold it to the back. This may make the folding process easier for you.
6.) The left and right points of your diamond, will now be touching the center crease on the backside of the front diamond.
7.) Next, fold along the purple lines as pictured below. Once again, it may be easier to fold forward, make a crease, and then fold it to the back.
8.) You will now have formed a smaller shaped diamond on the front.
9.) Fold the top and bottom along the purple lines pictured.
10.) This is not what you should have.
11.) Finally, fold the left and right side back just a little bit by following the purple lines illustrated below.
12.) And now you have a pumpkin!! You did it!
Now you can draw a face on or decorate as you want!
Second up......a ghost! (Diagram taken from http://www.origami-club.com/holloween/)
1.) First take one corner and fold the paper diagonally in half to create a triangle. Make sure that your main color is facing outwards. This fold will be used to make a crease only.
2.) Open your paper back up. You will fold in one side until it touches the center crease.
3.) Repeat on the other side.
4.) You now have folded the paper into a kite shape.
5.) Now take one side and fold forward as illustrated by the purple lines in the picture. Your point will be touching the center crease on the front.
6.) Repeat on the opposite side.
7.) Now turn the diamond over. This is the back.
8.) Next, you will fold one side in to make a diagonal crease on the bottom of your diamond. Your side will be touching the center crease.
9.) Repeat on the opposite side.
10.) Flip your diamond back over. You now will be looking at the front again. The two triangular flaps in the middle will be your hands. Take one and fold down, towards you.
11.) Repeat on the opposite side.
12.) Turn your diamond over again. Fold the top part down as illustrated by the purple line below. This will become the head of your ghost.
13.) Now fold up along the purple illustrated line. With this fold, you will be created the bottom portion of your ghost and its tail.
14.) Time for your last fold! Fold down a tiny bit as illustrated by the purple line below.
Turn your folded product over and look!!!!! You have completed your paper ghost!!!
Draw your face on your ghost to complete your project. I just had to add some ribbon on mine!!!
After you completed your pumpkin and ghost, you can put them together and make a banner or wreath or something else. I put mine together and made a small banner to hang over a side window in my dining room.
I hope you all enjoyed following along with me. If you want to fold some more Halloween origami, check out http://www.origami-club.com/holloween/ (Japanese only). You will find some other ideas that you can make with your kids. Hope you all have a safe and fun Halloween!
